Since June 12, 2023, over 135,000 food products sold in France now proudly bear the Planet Score label, providing an environmental labeling system to inform you about the impact of your consumption choices on the planet.

According to a BVA survey, 86% of the French population considers a score on food products indicating their environmental impact as essential. In the same survey, 91% of the French respondents would consult an indicator evaluating pesticide use if it were available.

Suppliers and distributors should pay close attention if they want to meet these new purchasing criteria.

Here's what you need to know about the Planet Score :

Empowering Your Shopping Choices and Environmental Preservation

UFC Que Choisir has just announced that the Planet Score label has been extended to over 135,000 food products sold in France since June 12, 2023. This now encompasses more than 200 companies, including 21 retailers such as Biocoop, Lidl, Naturalia, Franprix, La Vie Claire, Monoprix, Naturéo, and Greenweez. Moreover, over 30 brands have now adopted this label on their packaging in France, Spain, and Germany.

Now, for all these products, you have the opportunity to learn about their environmental impact, allowing you to make purchases while being fully aware of the most environmentally and health-friendly foods.

What is Planet Score?

Similar to the Nutriscore, the Planet Score, designed by the Institute of Organic Agriculture and Food (ITAB), is a rating directly displayed on food products to provide information on their environmental impact. This rating ranges from A to E, from green to red, indicating the degree of environmental harm, and it is also used to assess the impact on biodiversity, represented by colors.

The rearing method of animals is also taken into account with green, orange, and red colors. It's important to note that this parameter applies exclusively to products from animal husbandry or foods containing products from animal husbandry (representing at least 5% of the recipe mass), as specified on the greenly.earth.fr website.

A Scientific and Transparent Calculation Method

The Planet Score is based on a rigorous environmental assessment, using the Agribalyse database from ADEME as a starting point, while complementing essential missing elements in this database, such as the consideration of biodiversity, pesticides, and the update of climate data in line with the latest information from the IPCC.

It encompasses the entire environmental impact of the product, from its production to its arrival on your plate, taking into account factors such as ingredients, their origin, cultivation or rearing methods, packaging, and transportation.

The Planet Score addresses these challenges without complacency or misleading information (greenwashing), while maintaining a high level of rigor. The Planet Score label provides citizens with relevant information for their choices and gives businesses guidance on taking daily action to combat biodiversity decline, climate change, deforestation, as well as water and air pollution.

A Transparent and Consumer-Friendly Label

The Planet Score is a label designed to be displayed on food products, whether they are in packaging, on e-commerce websites, or in mobile applications. Its goal is to inform consumers about the environmental impact of food products.

This label provides a concise overview of the essential aspects and environmental challenges related to food, such as pesticides, biodiversity, climate, and rearing practices. Thanks to its intuitive and educational nature, the Planet Score is by far the preferred label among consumers, as evidenced by numerous studies (including UFC Que Choisir). It embodies the requirements and transparency, ensuring the absence of greenwashing and the genuine commitment of players in the agri-food industry who adopt it for their products.
